One word is enough!
The king of a far away country had committed the heinous crime of having murdered someone who was highly respected for his righteousness and learning. He became remorseful and wanted to learn what he had to do in order to be purified. So he started to look for a wise man for proper advice. At last he found one and he went to see the wise man. When the king arrived the wise man was not at home but his son was and the king decided to ask the son. Hearing the case of the king the son said: ‘repeat the name of God three times and your sin will be expiated’. But when the wise man returned and heard of the penance prescribed by his son, he remarked indignantly: ‘sins committed in thousands of births are purged immediately by uttering the name of the Almighty but once. How weak must be your faith, o fool, since you have ordered the holy name to be repeated three times?’
In the present times we are no longer used to the power of real concentration of a really focused mind. We have to repeat things endlessly if we wish to remember them and learn something. If one would know the power of one pointed attention, saying and hearing something once would be enough. Repetition is no longer necessary. We know the biblical saying: only say the word, and my servant shall be healed. This is how mantras and magic spells work. If Open, Sesame is uttered once, correctly, the door opens. Such a discipline, which is based on devotion and service, does not fit in our present age. We have to repeat everything many times before our mind opens up and takes these things to heart. The result is that everything takes so much longer before being done and finished.
We are so attached to this life that we wish to prolong it endlessly so that we can go on repeating the same things all the time. It is like a serious addiction. However, we will only be really ready for the return journey home, if we finish properly all the jobs and functions we have to perform. Above all, they should be allowed to return to peace. Everything has to be finished. Did not Socrates ask his friends in the very last seconds of his life to give a cock to Asclepius? Do not forget to give him the cock he said and passed away, having taken the hemlock.
The final proof of the effectiveness of one pointed attention lies in the measure of efficiency and uniqueness of our actions while emotionally being bound to nothing. Peace and contentment are the results. Doing just that, one remains free.

Circular Letter january 2010
An ant got lost in a sugar bowl. She took a grain of sugar and ate it. Liking the sugar she took a grain to carry back home. But on the way she decided to return and eat all the sugar in the bowl. The ant never returned home.
Living without proper measure brings us into a world of never ending desires which clamour for yet more and more. We are carried off by endless dreams, heedless of the truth or of the facts. Just like the ant, we are enveloped by a great blanket of forgetting. Only Oneness is the ultimate reality. It is not the glitter and glamour of the ‘more and more’. In real oneness there is just the all-embracing One. That One is also called ‘the One without a second’. That One is the ultimate truth, the ultimate reality. Living in a concrete and material world we are convinced that the material is its nature. Indeed we find it very difficult to visualize any other world or any other degree of realness. But matter maybe considered as an almost endless collection of molecules. These molecules may be divided into atoms and atoms into subatomic particles and subatomic particles in energy-fields. Finally, the energy-fields seem to merge in an mysterious emptiness. That apparent emptiness is most potent and the real basis of the material world. Seen from this angle the material world is like a dream and transient. Only One is real. What is not-One and therefore dual or multiple has been created and is relative and ephemeral. It has a beginning and therefore an end. What remains is the One, the potent and apparent emptiness.
This all-encompassing oneness is the basis of the love and charity as preached by Jesus Christ: love others as much as you love yourself. The same applies to the compassion of the Lord Buddha, to the mildness of Lord Shrî Krishna and to the empty fullness of Zen. Oneness includes everything and excludes nothing. In dire ignorance we turn all-inclusive oneness into the exclusivity of a chosen group, barring everybody else. Our lives become filled with contradictions. Everything becomes polarised because of pairs of opposites such as ‘ I and you’. Love turns into hate and anger, compassion turns into ruthlessness, mildness into cruelty and emptiness into endless consumption.
The truth remains that the limited arises from that which is unlimited. Everything arises from empty fullness which is most potent and creative. That fullness is the basis of inspiration and motivates us to bring our lives to fulfillment. Yet, at the same time, it is a dynamic and potent emptiness as in the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. The one substance of unlimited consciousness penetrates, inspires and transcends everything created. Everything comes forth from this one consciousness, is kept alive by it, and merges into it. This is the ultimate reality of any scientific research. Unity or oneness is not the fleeting product of an exalted mind but is a fact, the reality itself, the ultimate truth. There is nothing else. Only a knower of that ultimate reality can teach us how to get there. Seek and you will find.

Een koning van een ver land had iemand die alom gerespecteerd werd, laten vermoorden. Hij kreeg wroeging en besloot een wijze om raad te vragen. Na lang zoeken vond hij de woonplaats van de wijze man die ook een zoon had. De wijze was op dat moment niet thuis en zo besloot de koning op het ‘zo vader, zo zoon’ te vertrouwen. Hij legde zijn gewetensnood dus aan de zoon voor. De zoon zei dat hij de Naam van God drie keer met volle aandacht moest herhalen. Toen de wijze terugkwam en van zijn zoon hoorde wat er was gebeurd, zei hij: ‘zelfs zonden die voortdurend en over vele levens worden herhaald, worden onmiddellijk uitgewist door Gods heilige naam maar één keer uit te spreken. Domkop, hoe zwak en nietig is jouw geloof door te zeggen dat die naam drie keer moet worden uitgesproken.
In de tijd waarin wij leven zijn we niet meer gewend aan de kracht van werkelijke concentratie. Wij moeten de dingen vele malen herhalen en ‘uit ons hoofd leren’ als we ook maar iets willen leren en onthouden. Maar wie de kracht van éénpuntige aandacht werkelijk kent, heeft aan één keer genoeg. Herhaling is dan niet meer nodig. Uit de bijbel kennen we de uitspraak spreek slechts één woord en ik zal gezond worden. Dat ene woord hoeft ook maar één keer te worden gezegd. Want zo werken mantra’s of toverspreuken. Sesam open u wordt ook maar één keer uitgesproken. Zo’n discipline past echter niet meer in onze tijd en wij moeten bijna alles eindeloos herhalen voordat de dingen in onze geest werkelijk doordringen en ter harte worden genomen. Het betekent dat veel processen langer duren dan strikt noodzakelijk is.
We zijn verknocht aan dit leven en wensen dat het eindeloos doorgaat zodat we de dingen eindeloos kunnen herhalen. We zullen alleen klaar zijn om echt terug naar huis te gaan als we onze taken en dingen afmaken en alles netjes en vooral in vrede achterlaten. Alles moet ‘af’ zijn. Vroeg Sokrates niet in de laatste seconden van zijn leven aan zijn vrienden om een haan te geven aan Asklepios? ‘Vergeet niet hem die haan te bezorgen’ zei hij nog en blies toen zijn laatste adem uit.
Het uiteindelijke bewijs van de effectiviteit van éénpuntige aandacht ligt in de mate van vrijheid en oorspronkelijkheid die onze handelingen kenmerken. Vrede en tevredenheid zijn er het gevolg van. Wie dat doet, blijft vrij.
